Glory? A review

My year 9 history class were asked to produce their own reviews of the film "Glory", starring Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Matthew Broderick. This is the place where they upload their work.
Glory - The 54th Massachusetts Regiment in the American Civil War

  1. I've never seen this film before. I loved it. It showed the story of the 54th regiment of the Union army in the American Civil War. This unit was the first black army regiment in US history. They had to put up with horrific racist abuse and were treated badly by the army's leadership but under the command of General Gould Shaw they showed great courage and were part of the Union army's unsuccessful assault on the Confederate army's Fort Wagner.
I thought it was a really good film. Well acted and with some very convincing battle scenes.

The 54th regiment was made up of black men some were slaves and some were free but they all wanted to fight for the union side in the war. They were important because they were black and a lot of people saw them as not being as good as them. They saw them as being slaves that didn’t deserve freedom. We can learn that the black people aren’t stupid or dangerous and could be trusted with being armed with guns they were also very disciplined and loyal. The 54th regiment showed great bravery and helped to change people’s opinions also they were all volunteer. I thought the film was good and very helpful for me to understand what happened in the American civil war also helps me understand how slaves and ex slaves were treated and how the 54th regiment helped to win the war for the union side and get rid of slavery .

  4. In this movie there are a lot of good actors like Morgan
Freeman. The acting was very good in my opinion. The battle however was a bit unrealistic. We can learn about slavery and the civil war when you watch this movie it gives you knowledge

  5. ‘Glory’ is a film based on the creation and opening months of the life of the 54th Massachusetts. This regiment was the first Afro-American unit to be instigated in the history of America. The unit was led by one colonel Gouldshaw. They were important because they were the first black regiment ever formed and they were the first unit to enter the battle of Fort Wagner. The victory over the confederate army at Fort Wagner was a major turning point in the American civil war. From watching ‘Glory’ I learnt that the American army severely under-estimated the use of black soldiers due to fixated racial views. White Americans were also extremely racist towards the black soldiers in the American army. I thoroughly enjoyed watching ‘Glory’ and found it extremely entertaining. However the battle scenes used incredibly shocking techniques to portray blood, gore, death and destruction. Other than that it was a masterpiece of a wartime film that everyone in the class enjoyed watching.

  6. The Film "Glory" was a very good film and it included a lot of good actors like Matthew Brodrick, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. The film overall was very good and explained the civil war very well. It showed us a couple of battles but they were a bit unrealistic as some cannon shots didn't "kill" anyone when they were at their feet however some were far away and killed about 10 at a time... Except of this, it was a great film. 8/10. FS and 4

  7. glory is a wonderful and emotional film showing you the hard and proud times the 54th regiment had to got to where they were. the 54th regiment were led by colonel gouldshaw played amazingly by matthew broderick a tony award winning actor. this important part of history shows the first black army made up of ex slaves and how successful they became even with the hate they received. the film teaches us that the southern army were extremely racist and many people didn't believe the black soldiers had so much potential.it also shows gouldshaw being buried with the rest of the soldiers and ho in the end everything comes right

the film was amazing as it showed the emotions clearly and you could see the events through other peoples eyes. it had many different aspects which made the film good. there was sadness happiness fighting gore realism and even the smallest bit of humor. glory is definitely glorious

  8. I have just watched the film Glory. I really enjoyed seeing little bit of what happened in the American Civil War. The film follows the preparation and commitment that the 54th Massachusetts regiment of the Union army (the northern army). The 54th were an all-black troupe lead by a white commander. The film charts the training they go through, their rebellions, and the racist comments from other white troupes. Although, under the command of Commander Robert Gould Shaw battle through and led an attack on Fort Wagner. This was very brave and courageous as half of the 54th were killed in action. This breath taking film is really eye catching and allows us to get an accountant of what really happened from 1861-1865. The acting was very believable and was very heart felt especially in the attack on Fort Wagner. This film allows us to learn about the battle and how the 54th were treated at the time. This was very factual and in my opinion is quite reliable. I definitely recommend it.

  9. The 54th Massachusetts were the first black regiment. They fought the South alongside many other whites. They were all more determined to win at everything and had more fight in them than any other regiment. The 54th regiment fought to abolish slavery and it was more important to them than anyone obviously. When their leader died they not only carried on but they fought even harder. This shows the character within them and how much winning this war meant to them.
I like this movie but at the end I wasn’t clear who had won or what had happened. Most other things were very clear and I enjoyed the movie throughout.

    A Review Of Glory
After learning about the basis of the American civil war, I expected to watch a film made only for entertainment. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the film as it was filled with both historical facts and emotional scenes. I definitely recommend to you “Glory”.
The film follows a Northern sided regiment made only from escaped or saved slaves who wanted to make a change and make America one. They were known as the 54th Massachusetts and after long days of training all their work pays off. They were important because they were the first black regiment to fight in a battle, were the first regiment to have a black officer (played by Martin Freeman) and they lead the Northerners into the most important battle, Fort Wagner.
From this film you can learn not only about the civil war, but about the bonds created through all of the soldiers. It is definitely heart-warming and a must see for all history lovers and film lovers alike.

  11. Review on Glory
‘Glory’ is a modern film about the American civil war focusing on 54th Massachusetts regiment. This particular regiment was the first black regiment to be allowed to be fight for the union army and the first to have a black officer (Morgan Freeman) The unit was led by Colonel Robert Guldshaw. With fantastic a powerful, Oscar winning performance from Denzel Washington, it shows how singular minded America was regarding ethnic diversity. It shows the true meaning of the film- battle for worth, recognition and dignity. The final scenes were mesmerizing as it portrayed how violent and utterly destructive the battle of Fort Wagner.

The film ‘Glory’ is about the black people fighting in the American civil war. It tells the story of how the 54th regiment fought for their rites to fight in the American civil war. The American civil war was a war that happened between the north and the south of America. They were fighting to stop slavery. The 54th regiment were the first black people to fight in the American civil war. The film follows the story of the 54th regiment and there leader called Robert Gould played by the actor Mathew Broderick. The film also stars actors Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman that both play as black soldiers fighting in the American civil war. The 54th regiment were very important because they were the first trained black regiment to ever fight in war and after that black people were allowed to fight in wars. This film teaches us how the black people helped win the war against the south and how they fought for their rites.

  13. The 54th Massachusetts Regiment were a USA army regiment during the American Civil war from 1863-1865. They were the first regiment made up entirely of black soldiers, who were mostly escaped slaves from the Southern states. The 54th Massachusetts fought for the Union army. Their colonel was a white man named Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick). During the war, Robert wrote many letters home to his parents, which is how we know what it was like in the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. Therefore, they were able to make quite an accurate film. The film follows the story of the regiment as they train up and then eventually go into battle. The 54th were important because they helped to win the war for the Union army after the numbers of white soldiers got very low.
We are able to learn many things from this film. One of these is that the black soldiers were not treated equally to the white soldiers. White soldiers were paid $13 per week, yet the back soldiers were only paid $10. They were also not treated equally as Robert Shaw had to go to his commander to demand that his regiment were given shoes. Even then, they didn’t all get shoes that fit them. It also shows just how determined the black soldiers were to get freedom for all of the slaves, because they still went bravely into each battle even though they knew they could easily die.
Overall, I think this was an incredibly well acted film and I really enjoyed watching it. The battle scenes really helped to depict how horrible it was for the soldiers in battle. Also, you can see just how much racism the 54th regiment and all black soldiers in general had to put up with. I feel as though it tells the story of the Civil War very well, however it was obviously exaggerated in a lot of parts since it was really made to entertain not educate. It really did entertain and I really enjoyed watching the movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

  14. This film is the only film I have seen about the American Civil War as most films are now about the World Wars. Morgan Freeman stars in this film alongside other famous actors. This film is outlining the importance of the 54th regiment and showing tense battle scenes of what the soldiers went through during the battle. This film gives a good view on what the battle was about and who the 54th regiment were. The 54th regiment were in fact a group of soldiers who were named the northern side of the war. They believed that the slave trade should stop whereas the other side were wanting to keep the slaves as workers. In result the Northern side won and they were the first group to have been trained and the first group to have a black leader who was played by Morgan Freeman. *SPOILER ALERT* The leader of the northern side who was named Robert at the end of the film when he dies in battle he is buried in the same pit as all the other soldiers so this shows that they were not treating them any other way than fairly. This is one film that I would never watch at home but now I would highly recommend it to someone who is learning about the Civil War as it is very, very helpful.

  15. Over the past week, my class and I have watched the film “Glory.” In my opinion, I found the film overall mediocre. It tells the story of the 54th Regiment in the time of the American Civil War- to fight over the rights of black slaves. The northern state wanted to abolish slavery however the Southern state was fighting for it. Who were the 54th Regiment I here you ask? Well, they were the first black regiment and they were important because at the time they were the only black one. From my point of view, I enjoyed the film more towards the end, I think this is because there was more action. The acting was good and believable. However, due to this film being historical there obviously had to be many facts in there, which I found a bit boring and I just wanted there to be something exciting to happen. However, I’m sure that a historic fanatic would love this film. I think that it’s important to witness this film as it teaches us about the past and what our ancestors went through and educates us about the inequality and racism the black people went through. All in all, I would recommend someone fascinated in the history of slavery, human rights and equality. By Alix.

  16. A Review of Glory 15th December 2015
Recently for a topic in school our teacher allowed us to watch the award winning film ‘Glory’. The film embarks on a great journey on the 54th regiment known as the Massachusetts beginning to fight for the first time and finally get their racist rights. Although I thought this would only be for entertainment purposes it gave a truly historical view on the whole subject. We learn what the blacks truly felt and how many thing never change. As the 54th are the first Black regiment to fight for the American civil war it was very important that the film actually highlighted this topic.
The film stars Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington and Matthew Broderick as Robert Gouldshaw. This film is truly brilliant catching every piece of emotion they felt. You will learn a lot from this film if you are learning the topic. Glory is truly glorious. Rate- 9/10.

  17. I think was an amazing film! It was informative and very emotional. Glory is based about the 54th regiment, an army of black soldiers lead by a white man called Robert Gould Shaw. While training his army he wrote letters back home. It is because of his letters about how we know how the black army was treated. The 54th regiment was first made because the white army was losing many soldiers. Thousands of black men signed up for the army.
In the film it showed how the black soldiers were treated in different ways to the white soldiers. They got payed different wages to white soldiers and didn’t actually get to fight in the war at first. They were only used for labouring work. It shows that other people didn’t believe in them and thought that they couldn’t fight as well as whites. However this was proven wrong when they thought in their first battle and won.
However not all of their battles ended in successes. Glory shows us about the brutal battle at Fort Wagner. The 54th regiment played a crucial part in this by leading the assault on Fort Wagner. Unfortunately they got overrun with Robert getting killed and over half of the regiment.
Overall Glory tells the truth about the civil war by showing us how differently back soldiers were treated to white soldiers with different payments and harder conditions. Also about the brutality of war with the amount of deaths, injuries and what you had to go through if you had an injury. Finally the willingness of black soldiers to fight in the army with thousands of black men signing up to fight for their freedom.
Glory tells the truth and is a very good film.

  18. We watched Glory in our history lesson and I quite enjoyed it. The 54th Massachusetts were a group of black men, some were slaves and others were free. They all wanted to fight for the union side in the war; they were the first African American unit in the US during the civil war. They were important because they showed great bravery, helped win the war and played a part in bringing an end to slavery. We can learn about the 54th Massachusetts from this film as it shows how they helped win the war for the union side. Overall, I thought Glory was good because there were great actors who played their parts very well. It was very realistic and it teaches you a lot about the Civil War. It was mostly historically accurate although exaggerated at times. A great film for history lessons and for people who want to learn about the Civil War. However, I’m not sure if I would watch it for anything other than those reasons.

  19. Glory Review
Recently, for a class project, we watched the film award winning film glory. At first I didn’t expect it to be good and didn’t expect to like it. However it featured two of my favourite actors, Morgan Freeman and Matthew Broderick, and it pleasantly surprised me. I found the film very good and enjoyable as it was well acted and surprisingly accurate to history. It showed the story of the 54th Massachusetts regiment, they were one of the most important civil war regiments as they were the first black regiment of the war. They proved that the black soldiers were just as good as the white ones.
As well the historical accuracy it was entertaining, upbeat and Broderick and Freeman along with Denzel Washington delivered excellent performances as three of the most important characters of the film. Broderick played the role of Robert Gould Shaw the commanding officer of the regiment who writes home to his family frequently, Freeman plays the role of the first black commander in the union army and both are brilliant in the roles. In conclusion I believe that it was in general a really good film that told a very important historical story.

  20. I had never seen the film before we watched it in a history lesson. I actually quite liked it considering I don’t really like watching things like this. Glory is about The American Civil War between the Union Army and the Confederates (North and South). The Union wanted to use Black people as soldiers and they were called the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. The 54th was one of the first official African-American unites in the United States during the Civil War. They were treated badly by one of the sergeants when they were being trained to fight but they showed great courage to their leader Col.Shaw. I think the 54th was important because it showed that they wanted to fight for freedom. Some people on other reviews say that this wasn’t quite historically accurate but considering what I know about The American Civil War, it was quite accurate. They weren’t afraid to die for freedom and I think that we can learn from that. The acting was very realistic and it was very sad towards the end which I think made it even better because it wasn’t all about fighting. In my opinion, it was a very good interpretation of The American Civil War. I’m not sure whether it is historically accurate but it is still a great film and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I learnt a lot more from this film like why they wanted Black people to fight in the Union, why they wanted to fight, what happened in the battle in the end and how the people were treated when they were dead. I think the battles were realistic and that showed us what it was like to be a soldier and how it must have felt to know you could die the next day. By MJ.

  21. After watching Glory in class, a film in which I would never watch at home, I found it to be extremely interesting. I thought it was going to be boring and that I wouldn’t learn much but to my surprise it was very educational and if I had a chance to watch it again I most definitely would. Im giving it a 5/5
The film showed in detail exactly what happened during the civil war and acted brilliantly that you begin to fall in love with the characters (for me especially Robert Gouldshore). This film shows how the 54th massachusitts an how their black army came to lead the civil war into battle. Watch to find out!

  22. On the 1st January 1863, Abraham Lincoln freed all black slaves in the north. Many enrolled to become soldiers so several regiments were created for the former slaves. This film is based on the lives of those who fought in the 54th Massachusetts and their struggles against racist comments and back breaking training.
This film highlights the heart-warming respect and determination that Captain Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) had for his men. Morgan Freeman plays one of the soldiers that bravely steps up to his role of Officer. All the soldiers admire one another and their spirit never dies, despite the battles, weapons and men may lose.
Glory can tell us a lot about the American civil war as it is an accurate representation. The battles are engaging and realistic, this really emphasises how many soldiers were lucky enough to survive as by the end of the war 620,000 men had died. Their final battle proved fatal for Robert and he was buried amongst his men, without commending his brave efforts. A tear jerking moment for those who he inspired and a sad end to a glorious war film.

  23. Glory film review
The south southern states wanted to build their own confederate states but the north did not agree with this, thus the start of the American civil war.
In a basic outline of the film, it follows the story of black people who join the army but at first they are not allowed to fight but then they are allowed to fight and they do really well but then n fort Wagner they all fall and die, a big moment in the film is when the captain is buried in the same grave as all of the black people who he taught in his regiment.
This film was a decent representation of what went on in the America civil war. However the battle scenes were very farfetched and nothing that happened in this film would happen in real life. On the other hand the roles played by the people were very realistic and played very well, as it would have been hard to stay in character when pretending to be dead. The film tugged at the heart strings when Captain Robert Shaw (Matthew Broderick) died when the confederates killed his friend.
This film teaches us all about the struggles of the black people throughout the war. After the battle at fort Wagner it proved to the union army that black people should be treated the same as the white soldiers and they were equally capable.
This film outlines many issues the union army had with black people fighting in the union, the 54th Massachusetts were the first coloured platoon in the union army they were ex-slaves, they are important because they were the first black people to actually go out and fight. But they were not always allowed to go out and fight at first they had to do simple jobs around the camp and protect the camp and collect wood an odd jobs like that. From this film we learn that the 54th army were a very strong unit and they thought for what they though was right.

  24. The 54th regiment were a group black people who joined the revolution and fought in the northern army against the south and against slavery. They were regarded as they lesser fighters and were pre-judged just because of their colour. They were good fighters, but people though less of them due to the stories about how blacks were bad fighters were cowardly and didn’t make as good as soldiers as white men. However, they were finally given the chance to fight. Their first battle was a success. With minor losses, they won and in their first battle, they hit the ground running. But sadly, due to the many other victories that day, they newspapers decided not to write about their victory. Their second battle: an assault of fort Wagner, was no such a success. The regiment lost over half of their men.
The regiment were very important as due to their brave fighting, the black men were now allowed to fight in the war at the same ranks as white men.
    FANTASTIC FILM
    GOOD JOB

  25. Glory, a film based on the one of the most significant parts of history, the American Civil war. The war was to decide whether America was going to stay together as a union and whether the south side were allowed to keep black slavery in their lives. Glory is about the 54th regiment. The 54th regiment is so important because it was the first ever army to contain black soldiers with a black officer. The film teaches a lot about it. It portrays the way they were treated, what they would do behind the wars and who won their last ever battle.
At first I had low expectations about this film. Like most fighting films it’s hard to understand who is fighting who. However, the film Glory tells us about how the black soldiers were treated and what they did when not on the battle field. It is also good because it shows how the black soldiers triumphed even when people were being racist and making nasty comments about them. Because of this I really got into this film and loved the actors included. I would definitely recommended this film.

  26. The 54th Massachusetts regiment was one of the first African-America unit during the civil war. It was a voluntary infantry that saw extensive service throughout the war. The film Glory tells the story of the 54th regiment, led by the heroic colonel Robert Gould Shaw, who died during the attack against fort Wagner. Starting with the black men who volunteered, being trained on the training camps, learning skills and getting into fights with the other soldiers there. The film is very emotional with action packed battles, concluding of great accuracy. ‘Glory’ gives the black men that fought courageously before anyone else in the attack against fort Wagner, the respect and praise they deserved after many of them lost their lives for the white people that wrongly treated them. Due to racism their heroicness was forgotten after the civil war in American had ended. ‘Glory’ will reach the heart of everyone who watches it, keeping you on the end of your seat, constantly. All characters are played excellently by actor such as Morgan Freeman and Matthew Broderick. They make the whole film more emotional and honest.

  27. My class have recently watched the film glory. Overall I think that it is a very good film with lots of action and a really good storyline. It shows how slaves were treated and how even though the north were fighting for black freedom they still treated blacks differently in the camps and on the battle field. Blacks got less pay and weren’t allowed to fight. Overall I think that it is fairly realistic as it does show parts that would have really happened like when the 54th regiment along with others went to battle at fort Wagner and lots of them died. The 54th regiment proved that black men could fight so the war was turned and black men were then allowed to fight on the same terms as white men. It is a great film and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes battles.

  28. Glory Review

Glory is a film written in 1989 and directed by Edward Zwick. It is based on the 54th regiment of the union army (the north) who were fighting in the civil war to free the black people of slavery.

The 54th Massachusetts were the first proper, trained all-black regiment to fight ever in America. They also were the first group ever to have a black officer (played by Morgan Freeman) They proved that black men could do everything just as well as the white soldiers. The 54th regiment used to be slaves and was run by kernel Robert Shaw the soldiers were fighting for the right to be free. Originally the union army wasn’t planning on letting them fight they were just to do small jobs but never actually go into battle.

The last battle in the whole film is the battle which takes place at Fort Wagner, which the union army lost. The first people to go into battle were the 54th regiment they lost over half the men in this battle, but overall the union army won. In the end the equality is shown by the kernel who died was buried with all the black soldiers isn’t this equality in itself?

We can learn from this film that the union army decided to treat black people with the same respect as the others by being paid almost as much. Although they aren’t allowed to fight at the beginning or don’t get paid as much they still are allowed to be in the army. The film glory teaches us what it was like to be black at this time and how much it meant to them just to get free. It paints a clear picture of what they went through and all the faith that they put in just to get free. Ella

  30. Glory film review
The film Glory was about the 54th Massachusetts and how they were not allowed to fight in the civil war. They were finally allowed to fight but in their first battle, many of them unfortunately were killed.
In my opinion the film is a fairly accurate representation of what the civil war was like for black people who were soldiers. It highlights well that there were still quite a lot of racism towards the members of the 54th Massachusetts. The 54th Massachusetts were the first black regiment and the first regiment to have black officer. They were made up from ex-slaves and they were very important to the union in the civil war after they fought at fort Wagner, black people were allowed to fight in battles. The racism towards the 54th Massachusetts is clearly shown when the newspapers refused to write about how they won a battle.
Glory also shows that all of the soldiers had a very good relationship with Captain Robert Gould Shaw (played by Matthew Broderick). I think that this really added to the film as it made it more emotional, especially when Captain Robert Gould Shaw died.
